Bologna Business School (BBS) has officially opened its new eco-friendly campus, marking a significant milestone in its growth and positioning as a leading European business institution. Designed by the renowned Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA), the expansion reflects BBS’s commitment to sustainability, cutting-edge technology, and fostering connections between academia and industry.
The new state-of-the-art campus, which spans over 3,500 square metres, complements the historic Villa Guastavillani, a 16th-century Renaissance villa that has long served as the school’s headquarters. The expansion provides an additional space for learning and collaboration, enhancing the school’s ability to accommodate its growing community, which includes over 300 faculty members, 3,500 students from 65 countries, and more than 15,000 alumni.
Founded in 2000 and embedded within the centuries-old University of Bologna, BBS has rapidly risen in global rankings, with the Financial Times naming it the “highest riser” in recent rankings. The school is one of just 220 business schools globally to hold EQUIS accreditation, placing it in the top tier of institutions worldwide.
An Environmentally Conscious Campus
The new campus is a modern architectural triumph, designed with a focus on environmental sustainability. Located on a site previously occupied by incomplete structures, the campus has been transformed into a green, sustainable hub for learning. The design incorporates energy-efficient solutions, including a photovoltaic system that powers the campus, and a rainwater collection system that ensures efficient water use during the summer months.
MCA’s architectural approach integrates the new campus harmoniously with its surroundings. Large, open green spaces envelop the new buildings, which have been designed to maximise natural light and minimise energy consumption. The result is a contemporary complex that not only enhances the school’s capacity but also serves as a model for sustainable educational facilities.
A Space for Innovation and Interaction
The internal layout of the new campus is focused on fostering collaboration and interaction, moving beyond traditional classroom environments. The spaces have been designed to encourage interpersonal connections and experiential learning, reflecting the school’s interdisciplinary approach, which bridges academic theory with real-world business practice.
Max Bergami, Dean of BBS, spoke at the campus opening event, which was attended by notable figures including Italy’s Minister of University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna, and former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi. Bergami emphasised the importance of the new campus in advancing the school’s mission: “Bologna Business School is an institution of the 21st century. It is deeply rooted in the long history of the University of Bologna and simultaneously offers the best forward-looking education to participants from around the world.”
He added, “This new milestone reminds Italy, Europe, and the world that the past, present, and future can thrive within the same institution. It would not have been possible without the support of all our members and stakeholders who share our vision.”
Building for the Future
Mario Cucinella, Founder and Design Director of MCA explained the architectural vision behind the project: “The design revolves around the concept of unity in diversity. The building interacts with the landscape, creating a dialogue between the environment and the architecture. The historical significance of the site is interwoven with modern design to inspire the students of today and tomorrow.”
Bologna Business School’s new campus is a symbol of its ambitions for the future, serving as a hub for both academic and professional development. With a faculty comprised of 50% academics and 50% business leaders, the school remains committed to bridging the gap between theory and practice, ensuring its graduates are equipped with the skills needed to lead in an ever-changing global market.
The new facilities will help BBS continue to attract international students, academics, and industry leaders, solidifying its position as a key player in European business education.
