An 82-year-old Newcastle United superfan has had his dream come true after being treated to a VIP experience at a Premier League match. Eddie Futers, a lifelong supporter of the club and a resident of Esmere Gardens Nursing Home in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, was granted the special day out, reigniting his passion for football.
For over a decade, Futers had been unable to attend live matches due to health issues, but thanks to efforts from both Esmere Gardens and Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, his wish was finally fulfilled. On 15 September, Futers, along with his son and grandsons, were chauffeured to Molineux Stadium to watch Newcastle United take on Wolves.
The nursing home staff had been working tirelessly behind the scenes to arrange the day for Futers, ensuring that no detail was overlooked. Futers’ son, Dave, said it had been more than 30 years since the two had watched a match together, making the occasion even more significant.
Once at the stadium, Futers and his family were taken to a luxurious hospitality suite with a perfect view of the pitch. The suite offered a comfortable setting where they were served gourmet food and drinks throughout the match. As the game kicked off, Futers was delighted to see his beloved Newcastle United take an early lead. The thrilling contest ended in a 2-1 victory for Newcastle, much to the joy of Futers, who celebrated seeing his team win live for the first time in decades.
Reflecting on the experience, Futers said, “That day brought me back to life. I feel like I’m living again.” His words encapsulated the emotional weight of the day, which reunited him not only with his passion for football but also with cherished memories of watching games with his family.
The team at Esmere Gardens went above and beyond to ensure Futers’ day was unforgettable. Tim Taylor, one of the nursing home’s directors, described the occasion as part of their commitment to making dreams come true for residents. “For us, it’s about making our residents feel valued, regardless of their age. Eddie’s love for football and his family came together in a very special way,” Taylor said.
The match also provided an emotional moment for Futers’ son Dave, who said the day was one they would never forget. “Seeing my dad so happy was priceless. It was incredible to watch him light up, and I can’t thank everyone enough for making it happen,” Dave shared.
The heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the power of community and family, with small gestures making a huge difference in the lives of the elderly.
