The Global Chess League, a collaboration between the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and Tech Mahindra, is gearing up for its highly anticipated second edition in London. The event, which builds on the success of its inaugural season, aims to bring together the world’s top chess players in one of the most iconic cities.
Set to take place from 3rd to 12th October 2024 at Friends House in central London, the 10-day chess league will feature a unique team format that promises high-stakes competition and strategic play. London was chosen as the venue following enthusiastic feedback from fans across the globe, particularly in Europe, where interest in chess continues to grow.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed excitement about the league’s return. “Following the overwhelming response to the first season, we are thrilled to continue expanding the global reach of chess and offering new experiences to fans. Tech Mahindra’s dedication to revolutionising the modern chess ecosystem is commendable, and we are confident that this second edition will further elevate the sport.”
The Global Chess League aims to redefine the fan experience by introducing a new format and ecosystem, allowing supporters to engage with their favourite teams and players in a manner similar to major global sports leagues. The event will showcase some of the world’s leading chess talents, including reigning world champions and emerging stars, competing in a team format that emphasises collaboration and strategic depth.
Mohit Joshi, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tech Mahindra, highlighted the synergy between chess and business, noting the shared values of planning, strategy, and risk management. “The integration of technology presents exciting opportunities to transform both fields. The Global Chess League’s second edition offers a unique platform for the global growth of chess.”
The second season will also see the introduction of innovative fan engagement activities, such as the Global Chess League Trophy Tour. The tournament itself will follow a double round-robin format, with six-player teams featuring top male and female players, as well as a prodigy. Matches will be decided by a best-of-six board scoring system, ensuring intense and unpredictable outcomes.
Peeyush Dubey, Chairperson of the Global Chess League Board, spoke of the league’s future, “We are committed to leveraging the league’s innovative format and next-gen technologies to captivate and engage fans worldwide. The excitement surrounding this second edition is unprecedented, and together with FIDE, we aim to bring the very best of the chess world to a global audience.”
In addition to the tournament, FIDE and Tech Mahindra are launching a hackathon that invites participants of all chess skill levels to propose ideas for enhancing the chess experience. This initiative seeks to harness creativity in areas such as education, digital innovation, and social impact, further broadening the appeal of the game.
