Pearson and its online education platform, Connections Academy, have announced a major expansion of their college and early career readiness programme. The initiative, which now reaches over 20 schools, offers middle and high school students across the United States opportunities to earn college credits and industry certifications. This expansion means the programme is now available in more than half of the schools supported by Connections Academy.
Launched in 2023, the programme addresses the growing demand for job-focused education and career preparation. It allows students to gain high school credit, industry-recognised micro-credentials, and eligibility for college credits towards U.S. bachelor’s degree programmes. Initially supported through partnerships with Coursera, Acadeum, and Pearson’s Credly, the programme has now expanded its collaborations to include professional organisations such as the Future Business Leaders of America, The Home Depot, HOSA-Future Health Professionals, and the SEMI Foundation. These partnerships offer students practical experiences across various industries.
Lorin Thomas-Tavel, Managing Director of Pearson Virtual Schools, highlighted the importance of early career preparation. “Nearly 70% of students begin considering their careers before 11th grade, with 14% starting as early as kindergarten,” Thomas-Tavel said, referencing Pearson’s own research. “With the shift towards skills-based learning and recruiting, it’s crucial that we help students overcome barriers such as cost and provide them with direction, confidence, and valuable connections.”
The programme’s tri-credit approach supports students by offering high school credits, micro-credentials, and college credit opportunities. It includes a range of resources such as career assessments, lessons, and guidance for developing post-secondary plans. Students also benefit from career coaching, journaling, videos, and badge earning. This fall, the programme will further engage students with professionals in fields such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics, film, and creative industries.
The expansion means that students in over half of Connections Academy-supported schools now have access to these enhanced career and college readiness resources. Pearson plans to continue growing the programme, aiming to reach more schools and students in the coming years.
