A group of dedicated volunteers from Milton Keynes Community Cardio-pulmonary Group (MKCCG), based in Bletchley, has been honoured with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service 2024. This accolade, the highest award a UK volunteer group can receive, is widely regarded as the voluntary sector’s equivalent to an MBE.
The award recognises the vital work carried out by MKCCG volunteers, who provide essential support to those with cardio-pulmonary conditions in the community. The group will formally receive the award from Countess Howe, Lord-Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, at a ceremony later this year. Additionally, two volunteers from the organisation will be invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May or June 2025, joining other recipients of the prestigious award.
Tina Coles, Service Lead at MKCCG, expressed the group’s collective pride in the recognition. “As you can imagine, we are all very excited and proud that our volunteers have received this award,” she said. “Our volunteers make MKCCG extra special. Their passion, devotion, and reliability mean we can provide the fantastic service we offer today. Each and every one of them truly deserves this prestigious award.”
MKCCG is among 281 local charities, social enterprises, and voluntary groups across the UK to be recognised with the award this year. The honour highlights the crucial role volunteers play in improving the lives of others and fostering a sense of community.
Founded to support individuals with cardio-pulmonary conditions, MKCCG relies on its volunteers to run exercise sessions, provide emotional support, and create a welcoming environment for members. The group’s work not only improves the physical health of its participants but also helps combat isolation and build lasting relationships within the local community.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service was established in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, and its name was updated following the accession of King Charles III. It is designed to recognise exceptional contributions made by volunteer-led groups that bring real benefits to people’s lives.
Speaking about this year’s recipients, officials from the award programme emphasised the importance of grassroots initiatives like MKCCG in tackling social challenges and creating positive change.
The volunteers at MKCCG join a distinguished list of previous winners who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and impact. This latest accolade underscores the group’s dedication to supporting its members and improving community wellbeing.
As preparations for the formal award ceremony and Buckingham Palace Garden parties get underway, the recognition serves as a source of pride for Milton Keynes. The honour not only celebrates the work of MKCCG’s volunteers but also shines a light on the importance of voluntary service across the UK.
