A leading national law firm, Cartwright King, has pledged its support for victims of domestic violence by sponsoring the inaugural Peterborough Women’s Aid (PWA) Charity Ball. The event, held at the Holiday Inn in Peterborough on 2 November, raised vital funds for the region’s only specialist domestic abuse service.
The sold-out evening brought together community members, local businesses, and supporters to raise awareness and funding for PWA, which has been providing refuge for women and children fleeing domestic violence since 1975. Over the years, the organisation has offered safe accommodation, support programmes, and awareness initiatives, helping survivors regain control over their lives and work towards long-term change.
As a Silver Sponsor, Cartwright King’s involvement aligns closely with its specialisation in family law and its dedication to safeguarding the welfare of children and families. The firm’s nationwide teams provide expert legal guidance in areas including child protection investigations, care proceedings, and domestic abuse cases.
Rachel Maclean, Regional Director and Head of Care at Cartwright King, attended the ball and praised the work of PWA. “I have been deeply impressed by the support and kindness extended to women across Peterborough and surrounding areas,” she said.
Ms Maclean highlighted the pledges made during the evening to support families in refuge. “Businesses and individuals came together to provide school uniforms for children, sponsor day trips for families, ensure Christmas dinners, and fund counselling for those in trauma. This collective action demonstrates the power of community in creating a safer, more supportive environment for women and children.”
The Charity Ball featured a three-course meal, entertainment, and a raffle and auction, with proceeds directly supporting PWA’s critical services. The funds will aid programmes such as the organisation’s advice line, survivor group sessions, and awareness initiatives.
Peterborough Women’s Aid currently operates a refuge with eight self-contained rooms, communal spaces, and specialised support services, assisting approximately 31 women and 50 children annually. Additional resources include child support workers and a dedicated service for the local Lithuanian community.
Ms Maclean expressed her pride in the partnership with PWA, calling it a meaningful step toward creating lasting change. “Supporting Peterborough Women’s Aid goes beyond financial contributions; it’s about joining a movement that prioritises safety, empowerment, and rebuilding lives. This inaugural ball is a testament to what we can achieve together,” she said.
Peterborough Women’s Aid has emphasised its commitment to a comprehensive approach to tackling domestic abuse, focusing on prevention, awareness, and intervention. The funds raised at the ball will enable the organisation to continue its vital work, ensuring that survivors receive the support they need to rebuild their lives free from fear.
As the evening closed with dancing and community spirit, the inaugural event underscored the importance of partnerships like the one between Cartwright King and PWA in driving positive social change and supporting vulnerable members of society.
