UL Solutions, a global leader in safety science, has announced the development of a state-of-the-art Global Fire Science Center of Excellence in Northbrook, Illinois. This new facility is set to enhance the company’s leadership in fire safety, security, and the building and construction sectors, providing cutting-edge research and testing services to address critical industry needs.
Located on the company’s 110-acre campus north of Chicago, the new center will include both newly constructed labs and the modernisation of existing fire science laboratories. The expansion is expected to elevate UL Solutions’ already strong position in the fire safety sector, offering advanced testing and certification services for a variety of fire protection systems. These services will cover products such as commercial and residential sprinklers, pipes, fittings, valves, fire extinguishers, firefighting foam, exterior walls, and perimeter fire barrier systems.
UL Solutions’ commitment to fire safety is rooted in the company’s history, with fire safety testing being at the core of its mission for over 130 years. Jennifer Scanlon, president and CEO of UL Solutions, commented: “Fire safety testing represents the very core of our business, deeply intertwined with our founding principles. Public safety has guided our business, and fire safety still stands as a cornerstone of our mission of working for a safer world.”
The centre will play a pivotal role in supporting the fire protection needs of global markets, offering testing services for products from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. The aim is to ensure compliance with local building codes and insurance requirements, while also helping clients mitigate risk and safeguard lives and property.
In addition to testing services, the new facility will feature a dedicated research and development hub. This hub will focus on applied R&D services and provide science-based guidance to manufacturers, consultants, trade associations, and standards development committees. By fostering innovation, the centre will support the development of new products and technologies, enabling faster time-to-market and reducing risks associated with new product development.
UL Solutions is renowned for its ability to assess the fire resistance of products, materials, and systems — a crucial service for ensuring public safety and regulatory compliance.
