Dexter Procter, the world’s youngest doctor, brought joy and laughter to young patients at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital on 11 September. The event marked the launch of the new children’s fiction series, Dexter Procter, the 10-Year-Old Doctor, by former doctor and author Adam Kay and illustrator Henry Paker.
The special launch event, held at the CW+ MediCinema, was attended by thirty children and their families. Kay and Paker, known for their blend of humour and education, entertained the audience with readings, stand-up comedy, and a draw-a-long session. Each child received a signed copy of the book and play kits, including doctor dress-up costumes, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The Dexter Procter series is a humorous, yet educational medical mystery aimed at demystifying hospitals and medicine for young readers. The event at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital is the first of four in-hospital events organised in partnership with MediCinema and Starlight. These events are part of Play in Healthcare Week, starting 14 October, and will include visits to MediCinema at the Serennu Children’s Centre in Newport and children’s hospitals in Oxford and Leicester.
The campaign highlights the importance of play for children in hospital, aiming to improve their emotional wellbeing and alleviate the stress of medical procedures. MediCinema and Starlight recognise the emotional challenges faced by children in hospitals and are committed to making their experiences less daunting.
Adam Kay expressed his pride in supporting MediCinema and Starlight, stating, “Hospitals can be very intimidating for children, and these charities significantly enhance how young people experience our health services. It’s rewarding to contribute to their incredible programmes.”
The event received positive feedback from families, including a father who praised the creativity of Kay and Paker, noting his daughter’s enjoyment of the drawing session with Paker.
Paul Giggal, Chief Operating Officer of MediCinema, commended the event, saying, “The evening was filled with smiles and laughter, a rare but transformative experience for young patients. Such special events can help reduce anxiety and support mental and emotional wellbeing.”
Laura Walsh, Head of Play at Starlight, highlighted the critical role of play in hospitals. She remarked, “Play is essential for improving mental and physical health during treatment. It helps children cope with pain and manage their emotions. We are thrilled to partner with Adam and Henry to promote the importance of play.”
The book Dexter Procter: The 10-Year-Old Doctor was published on 12 September 2024, priced at £14.99 in hardback, with audio and ebook versions also available. Endorsements from notable authors include Jacqueline Wilson, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, and Francesca Simon, who have praised the book’s originality and humour.
Illustrated by Henry Paker, the book combines comedy with medical facts, aiming to inspire future generations of medics. The launch event and the upcoming series of hospital visits underline the book’s commitment to supporting children’s wellbeing through engaging and educational content.
