A recent survey has revealed that consumers are opting for healthier and more mindful drinking choices this festive season, with many reducing alcohol consumption in favour of non-alcoholic beverages. The survey, conducted by Holos Kombucha, found that 84% of respondents are consciously cutting down on alcohol over Christmas, with the primary motivations being health improvement, increased energy levels, and avoiding hangovers.
The study highlights a growing trend towards wellness and mindfulness, with 72.5% of participants indicating that their decision to reduce alcohol intake is driven by the desire to improve their overall health. Additionally, 43.5% of those surveyed said they were seeking to boost their energy levels, while 23.2% mentioned avoiding the negative effects of alcohol, such as hangovers, as a significant factor.
The rise in popularity of non-alcoholic alternatives reflects a shift in how people are celebrating the festive season. In fact, 87% of respondents believe that non-alcoholic drinks can be just as fun and festive as traditional alcoholic beverages. This growing acceptance of mindful drinking is being fueled by an increasing availability of drinks that offer both taste and health benefits, including immunity-boosting, gut-supporting, and energy-enhancing properties.
Among the non-alcoholic options gaining traction are functional drinks, such as kombucha, prebiotic beverages, and adaptogenic drinks. Naomi Partridge, co-founder of Holos, commented on the survey results, stating that consumers are actively seeking out beverages that provide not only great taste but also tangible health benefits. “Functional health drinks are becoming increasingly popular, with 14% of respondents exploring these options. The survey also found that consumers are prioritising ethical and sustainable values when making beverage choices. More than half of respondents (58.7%) said they prefer brands that actively support communities and operate ethically, while 85.7% consider organic products important in their purchasing decisions.
