Anglers using FishPal, a popular online service for booking fly fishing permits and accommodation, have raised more than £27,000 for angling and conservation charities. The donations aim to support the preservation of rivers, wildlife, and the promotion of responsible fishing practices among the next generation of anglers.
A notable contribution, amounting to £8,400, was presented to the TweedStart initiative at the ceremonial opening of the River Tweed salmon fishing season on 1 February 2025. The TweedStart programme gives young people hands-on experience in fly fishing, river stewardship, and conservation efforts, encouraging them to build an appreciation for Scotland’s rivers and the importance of maintaining their health for future generations.
The £8,400 donation was handed over by FishPal at the opening event, a traditional gathering led by Her Grace, The Duchess of Roxburghe. The occasion was celebrated with pipe music and the customary blessing of the river with a dram of whisky, marking the start of the salmon fishing season on the River Tweed.
Will Draper, Head of FishPal, expressed his gratitude to the fishing community for their generosity, saying, “This year, the opening of the Tweed fishing season celebrated both tradition and youth. It was an honour to present our cheque to the enthusiastic young anglers of TweedStart.” He went on to explain that the funds raised by anglers across Scotland, the UK, and Europe are crucial in helping TweedStart provide young people with essential fishing gear, such as rods, waders, and life jackets, while also offering them a valuable skill set that builds their confidence and connection to nature.
The TweedStart initiative also runs engaging activities for young anglers, including lessons on the life cycle of salmon, the importance of sustainable fishing, and hands-on tasks like pond dipping and fly tying. The programme gives participants the chance to catch their first fish while gaining a deep understanding of river ecosystems and the crucial role they play in the fishing industry.
FishPal, which facilitates online bookings for fly fishing, offers comprehensive advice on fishing conditions, river levels, and available fishing spots. The platform provides updates on all major Scottish rivers, including the Tweed, Tay, and Dee, making it easy for anglers to plan their next trip.
The service is also dedicated to offering permits at affordable prices, with some beats on the River Tweed available from just £12 per day. The River Dee, another major Scottish fishing spot, also saw its season open in February, with large crowds gathering for its ceremonial start at the Milton of Crathes. Anglers are now able to book permits for this picturesque location, which is known for its stunning views and the opportunity to catch large, multi-winter salmon.
FishPal’s ongoing support for conservation projects and youth-focused angling initiatives ensures that the future of Scottish rivers and the sport of fishing is safeguarded. The company’s free video updates also provide vital information on fishing conditions, allowing anglers to stay informed on the latest developments across Scotland’s rivers.
